An Ode To Wool

There are so many reasons why I love wool and have made it my medium of choice.  I love the way it smells, drapes, warms and even the way it feels.  Coarser wool I love for outerwear and softer choices I love for garments worn against the skin.  It comes in such a nice "natural" colour palette too, although I do love dyed yarns and fibre, my favorites are definitely natural.  The yarn I use most often is a good, old fashion, woollen yarn made locally (locally for me) at a small, family owned woollen mill.

MacAusland's 2 ply in natural light grey, natural dark grey and brown heather

I absolutely love this yarn and how I'm treated when I visit the mill, you can check them out next time you visit PEI, or you can check them out here

Productive Day.

As promised today has been much more productive.  I was able to cut and pin 7 Spicy Tie Bags to sew tomorrow, and I also brought along a Felted Bag to knit tonight at work.  I know, I know, lucky me, I get to knit at work!

These bags are sooooo cute, made with upcycled men's ties and fuzzy, wool blanket fabric.

A Couple Of Days Off.

There's nothing new to show for the last couple of days.  I didn't knit, I didn't design, I didn't even play with my new toy.  I think I just needed some time off, so I took it.  It was wonderful.  Back at it tomorrow.

My new Serger works great and wasn't as difficult to use as I thought it would be (I'd never actually operated one before).  Now I'm looking forward to the beautiful finish work it will do.

I am now the proud owner of my very first Serger...the Singer 2-3-4.  Now I just have to learn how to use it!

In case you're wondering, today's project in alchemy was indeed a success, 4 more felted bags.

Snow days are good for business....

....well, not good for business in the sense that I couldn't get to my day job yesterday, but good for THIS job as I was able to sit and knit and dream about designs without a smidgen of guilt or interruption....teehee!

I really did have a wonderful day making handbags that are destined for the felter (aka, the washing machine), I like to felt in small batches so for these babies I need 4 for a load. Done.  Tomorrow I'll do the finishing and felting, or as I like to call it the "alchemy".

This was the last batch....I love these bags.

What I've Accomplished this far...

When the first of January rolled around this year, my focus was this new venture and making a finished project a day for each day of January.

To date this year I have finished:  4 pairs of felted slippers, 2 small rugs, 1 pair felted mitts, 4 felted bags, 9 Christmas stockings, 4 tie handled bags, 1 hot water bottle cozy, 1 pair of socks, 6 hats, 6 mostly finished (oops still working out some details on these) purses and 1 lonely felted bowl....I think that's everything.

That is 39 projects for 42 days so far in 2011...I am so ok with that!!!!

And so it begins......

....a new venture, new website, new head is spinning!  I've been knitting for profit for a couple of years now and with much encouragement from my Husband and friends, I'm going into it full speed ahead.  Since I started selling, I've really only made and sold enough to pay for my yarn/fibre habit and an annual Fibre Retreat that I like to attend, but now, I'm dedicated to making this a career.  So let's see what the future holds, I know I'm very excited to give it a go and find out.

The website and blog (well the studio and production also) are still works in progress, but I thought it would be fun to blog about the journey.  So far I've narrowed down my merchandise into two catagories: 1. objects that are knit (this consists of both hand and machine knit) including felted items and 2. objects that are made from woolen blankets and upcycled fabrics.  So I guess it isn't really fair to call it a "Knitting" studio, so much as a "Textile" Studio.

Under the knits category I am making small area rugs, felted mittens, felted bags, felted slippers...and under the fabrics category I am making scarves, Christmas stocking, hot water bottle covers, purses and hats.  So all together there's some knitting, felting, crocheting, sewing and a whole lot of creative fun....

....wish me luck:)
